What Dog Health Insurance Plan Should I Choose? And there are so many ASPCA Pet Insurance plans to choose from! Be sure to do your homework before you decide. We'll go ahead and list some of the highlights here which should help point you in the right direction. Their Safety Plan is the most affordable, and it’s great to have in case of an accident. It covers things like: - Burns
- Bee Stings & Insect Bites
- Bone Fractures
- Lacerations
Their Primary Plan covers accidents and illnesses. It does not include wellness coverage, but it does cover things like: - Treatment/Medications for Injury & Illness
- Diagnostic Procedures, Lab Tests, & X-Rays
- Surgery & Hospitalization
- Dental Services Associated w/ an Illness or Injury
Their Advantage Plan covers accidents, illnesses and included wellness coverage. So you’d be covered for things like: - Spaying / Neutering
- Boosters & Vaccinations (Canine Distemper Combo, Coronavirus)
- Annual Physical Exam & Fecal Exam
- Heartworm Testing
Their Premier Plan covers all that and more: - Lyme & Bordetella Vaccines
- Leukemia Test
- 12 mos Flea/Heartworm Medication
- Annual Dental Cleaning
Their Sterling Plan is the most expensive, but it is beneficial because it covers everything listed above, plus treatment for illness/injury that occurred during a previous plan year that requires ongoing care & treatment. ASPCA Pet Insurance also offers an added coverage called the Continuing Care Option, which is only applicable for their Primary, Advantage, and Premier pet health insurance plans. With the Continuing Care Option your pet would be covered for long-term conditions like: - Allergies
- Cancer
- Diabetes
- Osteoarthritis
- And Other Chronic (Long-Term) Conditions
This is what gets tricky and confusing about health insurance for pets. Without this add-on, if your pet was treated during one plan period, you’d have to wait 180 days since then for reimbursement. Does that make sense? I told you it’s confusing! It’s also important to note that you can only add-on Continuing Care when you first enroll or when your policy renews…you can’t add it during the middle of a policy period.
Dog Health Insurance ExclusionsUnfortunately, there isn’t an insurance company out there that will cover everything. So keep an eye out for their exclusions, which is just a nice way of saying what they won’t cover. Because the ASPCA is an organization dedicated to the protection of animals, they won’t cover some elective procedures that may be considered to be inhumane. ASPCA Pet Insurance will not cover some procedures common in the Weimaraner breed, such as tail docking and the removal of dewclaws. They also will not cover ear cropping.
