ASPCA Rescue Prevention of Animal Cruelty
ASPCA Rescue is a service of the ASPCA, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The organization was founded in April 1866, for the prevention of animal cruelty. To raise awareness about animal welfare, the ASPCA reaches out every April to educate the public about the prevention of animal cruelty. The American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals chose the month of April primarily because this privately funded, not-for-profit organization was founded in April 1866.

You Can Help Stop Animal Cruelty
- Learn to recognize the signs of animal cruelty. Some of the most obvious are listed below:
* Blatant physical abuse such as kicking, hitting, or beating. * Dog fighting and cockfighting. * Denying basic necessities such as food, water, and shelter. * Animals who cower in fear of their owners. * Animal hoarding. If you’re unsure about what is cruel and what is not, please visit the ASPCA’s Cruelty Glossary on their website. It’s absolutely shocking what so many animals (not just dogs) are subjected to. - Be aware that animal cruelty is a crime. All 50 states have animal cruelty laws. Know your state’s laws and their penalties. If you suspect someone is abusing an animal, call the police or contact your local animal control department. Be prepared to provide as much information as possible about what you witnessed.
- Set a good example and teach your kids how to treat animals properly. In most cases education is the best way to stop animal cruelty.
Children should be taught at a very early age to treat all animals with kindness and respect. Explain to your kids that animals are living creatures just like human beings, and that they too have feelings such as pain and happiness. Take your children to visit an ASPCA Rescue. - Be an advocate and an activist. Fight for legislation on all levels (federal, state, and local) that will protect all animals.
You can send letters to lawmakers and federal officials asking for harsher penalties for animal abusers. I became an Advocacy Brigade member and I encourage you to do the same. Just register and you’ll receive emails directly from the ASPCA Rescue, encouraging you to send letters to your lawmakers. They really do make it easy for you! - Support your local animal shelter or rescue organization. You can volunteer at a shelter, you can be a foster home, or even adopt an animal who greatly deserves and needs a second chance. If you’re able to, animal shelters and rescues are always in need of donations. While financial support is necessary for medical care, etc. Many shelters or rescues are happy to accept things like food, kitty litter, trash bags, and pet beds to name a few.
There are many ways that you can help to prevent animal cruelty and support your local ASPCA Rescue or other rescue organization (such as a Weimaraner rescue). Why not get involved?
