Tips for Choosing a Reputable Dog Breeder
Choosing a reputable dog breeder can be as important as choosing the best dog. Consider these tips for finding a reputable dog breeder among the many Weimaraner breeders. Choosing a responsible dog breeder involves asking a lot of questions. By asking questions, you should be able to find an ethical dog breeder that you feel comfortable with. And although we're focusing primarily on Weimaraner breeders, this information pretty much applies to any dog breed. A responsible breeder of Weimaraner puppies asks any prospective buyer a million questions because they want to be sure their Weimaraner pups are going to good homes. You should be asking just as many questions of the breeder. A good dog breeder will be understanding, and won’t mind your questions! While it may seem excessive having to answer so many questions about your life (just to get a dog), it’s really important to be sure that the puppy is going to a permanent and loving home. Weimaraner breeders don’t want their pups to end up in a shelter, and neither should you!
Choosing a Reputable Dog Breeder Ask These Questions! Why was this litter bred? The breeder should explain that the dam & sire have qualities (and list those qualities) that they wanted to be passed to improve this line of Weimaraners. Red Flags: They bred… - To make money.
- Because they thought it would be a fun experience.
- Because they wanted to have a litter before they spayed her.
How often do you breed? Litters should be planned and bred no more than once per year. Find out how much time passed between breedings. Can you provide the health history of the pups parents? A good breeder should be able to provide documentation to support that they have been screened for common health problems associated with the breed. Will you keep in touch to verify the pup grows to be a healthy dog with a good temperament? A good breeder will be available to give you advice or answer questions that you might have throughout the lifetime of the dog.
Choosing a Reputable Dog Breeder… Watch Out for Red Flags! The answers to these questions should be YES. - Is the breeder a member of a Weimaraner club?
- Are the Weimaraner pups parents (dam and sire) at least 2 years old?
- Are the Weimaraner puppies (AKC) registered?
- Do the pups parents have OFA or Penn-Hip Certifications?
- Is there a written contract?
- Is there a health guarantee?
- Is the breeder available to offer advice and support for the lifetime of the dog?
- If (for whatever reason) I am no longer able to care for the dog, would the breeder accept the dog back or assist me in finding another home for the dog?
The answers to these questions should be NO. - Are the puppies being shipped in or sent from a different location?
- Will the breeder be willing to sell a puppy less than 7 weeks old?
- Does the breeder sell more than two different breeds?
- Does the breeder charge different prices for different puppies?
- Does the breeder offer special sales prices or promote their puppies as gifts?
- Does the breeder breed with the purpose of making a profit?
- Does the health guarantee require that the dog be euthanized, returned, or replaced, due to a health problem?
- Is the breeder defensive, or reluctant to answer your questions?
Choosing a Reputable Dog Breeder Choose Passion Over Profit! We do not recommend buying from someone who sees breeding as their business. An ethical dog breeder isn’t in it for the money. A good breeder will probably even tell you that (after all the expenses) there is no money in breeding. Regardless of opinion, it’s safe to say that by choosing a reputable dog breeder, you are choosing someone who is extremely knowledgeable and who has the breed's best interest at heart.
