Cleaning Dog Ears
Weimaraner Dog Ear Care Instructions
Regularly cleaning dog ears is the best way to avoid infections and maintain good ear health. For a no hassle ear exam, start handling your dog’s ears as early in puppy hood as possible. When you’re petting your puppy, rub her ears and lift them up to look inside. Get into the habit of checking your Weimaraner’s ears about once a week.
3 Easy Steps to Cleaning Weimaraner Ears

1. Start by moistening a cotton ball or pad with the ear cleansing liquid. Gently wipe the outer part of the dog’s ear until it’s clean. 2. Most people say that you should never use a Q-tip for cleaning dog ears, because you risk damaging the ear drum and possibly even pushing more gunk into the ear. However, you might need to use a Q-Tip to get gunk out of the cartilage folds in the visible part of the ear. Just be very careful to not put the Q-tip into the ear canal. Doing so can cause serious damage. 3. There are two ways you can use the cleansing liquid to dissolve the wax and debris that has built up in the ear canal. After administering the ear cleansing liquid and gently massaging the ears (you’ll hear a squishy sound), your dog will shake his head which will help loosen the dirt and waxy build-up. - First Method (for Cooperative Dogs):
Fill the ear with the cleansing liquid and then gently massage the ears for about 30 seconds. The liquid should overflow, that’s why you need a towel for clean-up. When you’re done massaging the ear use a cotton pad to wipe the ear clean. It’s normal to see some slightly brown stuff, that’s just ear wax. For stubborn cases, you may have to use an dog ear wax remover . - Second Method (for Less Cooperative Dogs):
For less cooperative dogs, try this method: Soak a cotton ball with the cleansing liquid and then place it in the ear (sort of like an ear plug). Do not pack it in the ear. Then gently massage the ears for about 30 seconds and wipe clean with a cotton pad.
Your dog ear care is all done! Cleaning dog ears only takes a few minutes, and the job is done! Be sure to give your doggie some dog treats and lots of praise for doing a good job. Make it a positive experience so that your dog isn’t afraid of future dog ear cleaning.

Do’s and Don’ts for Cleaning Dog Ears:
- DO be patient. If your dog puts up a struggle, keep the session short.
- DO be proactive. Regularly check your dog’s ears for signs of infection, like a stinky odor & lots of build-up.
- DO repeat cleaning once or twice until the ears wipe clean.
- DON’T use Q-Tips. If your dog moves suddenly the Q-Tip could cause major damage.
- DON’T use rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide. It can be irritating to your dog’s ears.
- DON’T re-use cotton balls or pads. Cleaning dog ears with an already used cotton ball will transfer bacteria and cause problems.
