Quick Guide to Hiring Pet Sitters

Featuring our Interview with
a Professional Pet Sitter

Finding Pet Sitters
There are so many places to look! Referrals are usually the best way to find someone. Ask your friends or your neighbors who they would recommend. If you have a pet with special needs, ask your Vet for a recommendation. Many pet sitters are also actively working in Veterinary Hospitals, so they are trained to handle pets that need special care.

Another source for finding a dog sitter is the internet. There are tons of websites (like SitterCity dot com) dedicated to matching up pet owners in need of professional pet sitters.

Choosing a Pet Sitter
Invite potential sitters to your home to meet you and your pet(s). Conduct an interview. Always ask for references and get proof of bond and liability insurance coverage.

Ultimately you’ll need to go with your instincts. If you’re not comfortable with someone, simply let them know that you appreciate their time but that you are going to keep looking. The idea is to find someone you can trust in your home who will keep your pet(s) happy and safe while you’re away.

Be a Good Client
Once you’ve found someone that you feel is qualified and trustworthy; there are a few things you can do to make the job easy. Be prepared and provide as much info as possible to your sitter. This check list might help you.

  • Place leashes, food, meds, doody bags, etc. in a designated area for easy access.
  • Point out your dogs idiosyncrasies. For example: Spike chews socks, so don’t leave socks anywhere within reach of Spike.
  • Provide your sitter with your contact info & itinerary.
  • Let your neighbors know that you’ve hired a sitter to look after your pet(s) so they aren't suspicious when they see a stranger going into your house.

Some other things to consider. Let your sitter know if there are any areas of the house that are off limits. For example: The guest bathroom has a broken toilet. If your best friend is coming over to water the plants, let your sitter know so s/he’s not startled by an unexpected visitor.

Interview with a Pet Sitter

If you’re looking for professional dog sitters and dog walking services in the Irvine area of Orange County, California, we’ve got the girl for you!

Maddie’s Pet Sitting serves the Irvine area and she is one of the best in the biz. We tracked the busy girl down for an exclusive interview.

Weimaraner-Puppies.com is asking the Q’s.
Maddie from Maddie’s Pet Sitting in Irvine is providing the A’s.

Q. What experience do you have working with animals?
A. Other than having animals in my life since I was a little girl, I have been working at an Animal Hospital, as a Veterinary Technician, for the last 7 years.

Q. Are you bonded and insured?
A. Yes, and I'm happy to provide proof of liability insurance and bond coverage to potential clients.

Q. Can you provide references?
A. Absolutely. I believe it's important to build a personal relationship with a client. After all, they are trusting me in their home with their beloved pets. I value that relationship and encourage new clients to contact my existing clients for their recommendation.

Q. How did you become a pet sitter?
A. A friend, and fellow Veterinary Technician, started teaching me about pet sitting when she applied to Veterinary school. She ended up getting into school, so she passed her clients on to me.

Q. What advice would you give to someone interested in starting a pet setting business?
A. I think it’s always helpful to know the signs of a healthy animal. So, just in case you walk into a situation where a pet is sick, you can know what steps to take to making sure the pet is safe while in your care.

Q. What cities are you willing to travel to?
A. Because pet sitting is not my full-time business (I am a student and also work at the animal hospital) I am limited to how far I can go. Driving to and from does take a lot of time. Right now, most of my clients are in Irvine, Tustin, Costa Mesa, and the Newport Coast. It's really not feasible for me to drive much farther due to my class schedule.

Q. Do you have pets of your own?
A. Yes, I have a 13 year old Rottweiler (named Angel) and 2 cats, Munchkin and Windy.

Q. What would you do if my dog got sick or injured while under your care?
A. Before I start sitting for you, I have you fill out a contract with your information, and letter of authorization to treat your pet in case of an emergency. If any emergency does occur, I try to contact the owner first, then proceed to take the pet to the facility requested by the owner.

Q. Is it appropriate for a client to tip a pet sitter?
A. Tips are appropriate, but not required. Some of my clients do tip me, which I am extremely grateful for. But a tip is never expected.
