Signs of Dog Pregnancy

How to Tell
if Your Weimaraner is Expecting

Unlike in humans, signs of dog pregnancy may be quite difficult to detect.

If you think your Weimaraner is experiencing dog pregnancy symptoms, the best way to find out is to visit your veterinarian.

A dog pregnancy test is also available if you suspect your dog to be pregnant.

Sometimes, you wouldn’t even notice until your dog is halfway through her pregnancy leaving you not being able to properly care for her.

Physical Changes
as Dog Pregnancy Signs

Here are some signs and symptoms to look for in a pregnant dog:

The first change which is most noticeable in a pregnant dog’s body is in the breasts. If you look closely at the dog’s nipples, you will see that it has become engorged or swollen and turning a darker shade of pink. This is in preparation of eventual milk production for the new pups.

Decrease in appetite is also one of the earliest dog pregnancy symptoms which you may notice. This usually occurs during the first few weeks of pregnancy. Later in the pregnancy, your dog will have an enormous increase in appetite. This symptom is somewhat similar to “morning sickness” in humans.

Halfway through the pregnancy, your pregnant dog’s stomach will become visibly larger as the puppies grow. You may even see some movements if you look closely.

A clear mucus vaginal discharge may also be noticed after four to five weeks of being pregnant. This will continue until your dog gives birth.

Behavioral Signs of Dog Pregnancy

Your Weimaraner may be having mood swings if she is pregnant. If she is usually friendly and affectionate, you’ll be surprised of her sudden aloofness.

This may be a sign of the development of her nesting instincts. All dogs and other animals are very protective of their young so be careful in handling your dog and her new puppies.

Nesting usually occurs when the pregnancy draws to a close. You will notice this when your dog suddenly looks for a place away from everything and everyone. This may either be in a secluded area outside your house or in a small corner in the kitchen.

Make your dog comfortable by providing blankets and other familiar things on her nesting place.

Visit your Vet
for a Dog Pregnancy Test

If you are still unsure if your dog is pregnant, plan a visit to your vet and have your dog undergo a pregnancy test. This involves testing your dog’s blood for relaxin, a hormone that is produced by pregnant dogs. It can be done about three to four weeks into the pregnancy.

Your vet can also palpate or feel your dog’s stomach for signs of puppy movements. You may also opt for an ultrasound as this is the most reliable way to confirm your dog’s pregnancy.

When you finally detected the real signs of dog pregnancy, give your dog the proper care and comfort.

Give her nutritious food and provide regular exercise for her. Knowing that your dog is healthy while pregnant will give you the assurance that your pet’s puppies will also be as healthy as they can be.
