Weimaraner Breeders

Ethical Dog Breeders vs. Backyard Breeders

All Weimaraner breeders are not ethical dog breeders.

Do your homework and seek out reputable dog breeders when looking to purchase your Weimaraner dogs.

Choose your breeder carefully, and avoid needless medical expenses and heartache!

If you're shopping for a Weimaraner puppy you will more than likely be dealing with Weimaraner breeders.

From our experience, we hope to give you a little insight so you can recognize the difference between reputable breeders and bad breeders.

Have an experience with a dog breeder?

What advice can you share?

Learn from Our Experience...

It's embarrassing to say, but we definitely learned the hard way when we got our puppy from what I now consider to be a backyard breeder. We thought we knew what we were doing. We asked them questions and everything appeared to be acceptable.

Shortly after we brought him home, we registered him with the AKC. Then we got our Certified Pedigree certificate in the mail.

Much to our surprise, we saw that our puppy's parents were brother and sister. And they were bred from a brother and sister. So it appears to us that our purebred Weimaraner is twice inbred ... and now we are dealing with an undiagnosed medical mystery!

This proves that just because a dog comes with "papers" it might not necessarily be a good example of the breed.

Weimaraners tend to have a lot of health problems because they were bred from such a small sample to begin with.

Had we known then what I am going to share with you now, we would have recognized the red flags and probably wouldn't have got a puppy from that particular breeder. Don't make the same mistakes we made, regardless of what dog breed you choose.

Ethical Dog Breeders

Understandably, different people have different ideas as to their definition of an ethical dog breeder .

Ethical Weimaraner breeders:

  • Are dedicated to and knowledgeable about the breed of Weimaraner dogs.
  • Belong to a local breeding club and/or national club, like the AKC.
  • Plan the litters and breeds responsibly to improve the breed and maintain good temperament.
  • Keep the puppies with their mother for at least 5 weeks, and won't adopt out until 8 weeks.
  • Will offer support by providing advice and answering any questions you have along the way.
  • Will accept the dog back if it doesn't work out in your home.

Getting a puppy is a big decision because you are taking responsibility for that puppy's quality of life for the rest of its life.

Buying from an ethical Weimaraner breeder doesn't guarantee you a perfect dog, but you will definitely be ahead!

Backyard Breeders

Generally the consensus on backyard breeders is that they are not ethical, not responsible, and not trustworthy. Whether this is through malicious intent or just pure ignorance, is not important.

We got our Weim from a backyard breeder and didn't realize our mistake until it was simply too late. I do not recommend purchasing a dog from a backyard breeder, primarily because of the common dog health problems associated with dogs that are inbred or over bred.

Choosing a Reputable Dog Breeder

After doing your due diligence, choosing a reputable dog breeder is... up to you! Just like any other big life decision, it's important to weigh the odds.

Evaluate the pros and the cons. And do the right thing. Remember that there is no perfect scenario.

So seek out Weimaraner breeders that you believe meet most of your criteria.
