Nov 15, Outbreak of Canine Flu in Northeast

Veterinarians are warning dog owners that canine flu has become an issue in the Northeast, particularly in the New York City area.

First discovered in Florida in 2005, the dog flu is very contagious and causes coughing, a runny nose and a fever. It is not fatal.

Because the flu is a virus, there is no treatment for it, but veterinarians often give a dog antibiotics to cure any secondary infections that may have developed.

Dogs in shelters and kennels and dogs that come into contact with other dogs are most likely to get the flu. People cannot get it from their dogs.

Aug 25, Weim Owners Hurricane Preparedness for Pets

Have you considered hurricane preparedness for pets for your Weimaraner?

Weims present some unique issues because of their size. And, even though they are large dogs, they are not kennel dogs. They love to be with the family and around people.

In addition, they need exercise, lot of exercise. And, if you are staying in a pet-friendly hotel or in an evacuation shelter, your dog (even if it’s allowed to be there) is not likely to have room to run!

And many Weimaraners are a bit high strung. They may become excited during thunderstorms or experience separation anxiety when you are not at home.

You will need to consider all these things when mapping out a strategy for evacuation with your Weim. And keep in mind the things that your pet enjoys, like favorite toys or treats, so that your evacuation will be as un-stressful for you and your dog, as possible.

Click on the link below for more info on hurricane preparedness for your pet.

In South Carolina, Jacklyn Marie Jacobson and her neighbors are rejoicing that Jacobson’s son Tyler, is home safe. And Tyler is safe because of the family dog.

Friday night Tyler went to get some juice, but never returned. Jacklyn reported him missing around 8:00 p.m. and the police searched the area, using helicopters with infrared capabilities. When they didn’t find Tyler by 12:00 a.m., the search was called off.

The next morning, Tyler was found across the street from his home, behind the neighbor’s house. The family dog was barking to get attention.

It seems that the dog had stayed with Tyler all night, keeping him warm and safe, in 40 degree F temperatures!

Mar 23, Recall of Pig Ears with Salmonella Bacteria

Jones Natural Chews Co. of Rockford, Illinois has recalled 2705 boxes of Pig Ears. In this pet food recall, Jones Natural Chews Pig Ears has recalled boxed Pig Ears that were distributed in CT, IA, IL, MA, ME, MI, MN, MO, MT, NC, ND, NJ, NM, NY, PA,VA, WA, and WI.

In an inspection, some of the pig chews were found to be contaminated with salmonella bacteria. The pig chews were shipped to retailers last fall, between September 15, 2010 and November 2, 2010, and they could still be on retailer’s shelves, or in your pantry.

Dogs can become ill with salmonella, and people who handle pet food contaminated with salmonella can also become ill if they don’t wash their hands, and they contaminate food that they eat.

For more information on dog salmonella go to my recent article, Salmonella Symptoms in Dogs.
